Assaults on the Child in Criminal Statistics
Notes on translation:
The word used to descibe the crimes reported on in these documents (Wittrock, U. 1992, 1995) is "misshandel". It literally means "to mis handle", with the idea of not dealing with a person (physically) in a proper manner, situations commonly referred to in English as assault, battery or abuse. It is used for all cases at all ages, adults and children alike.
I have generally translated "misshandel" as assault in these documents, since that is the term commonly used in English.
In the tables there is information given for "large urban counties". That is a common term in Sweden and refers to the large metro areas of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.
The tables also refer to "other Nordic countries". The Nordic countries are Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. They are usually separated out in statistics, because of the common free labor market and freedom of citizens of one Nordic country to move to and reside in any other Nordic country.
